SleepySleep plays calming sound for your baby and can listen for them, day or night. A baby app that uses the microphone should be very clear about what it does with it. This page explains, in plain words, what SleepySleep stores, what (if anything) leaves your phone, and the choices you have.
The short version
- The microphone never records. Sound is analysed live on your phone and let go straight away. No audio is saved and no audio is ever sent anywhere.
- Nothing to sign up for. You don't create an account, log in or give us your email. Your subscription belongs to your Apple ID, so Apple keeps track of it for you.
- Your baby's name, your settings and your listening reports stay on your phone. We never receive them.
- No ads, no tracking, no selling. SleepySleep contains no advertising or third-party tracking code, and doesn't use your advertising identifier.
- Payments are handled by Apple. We never see your card details or your Apple ID.
- Usage statistics are opt-in only. You can choose to share anonymous usage data to help improve the app. Nothing is sent unless you say yes.
Who we are
SleepySleep is a pet project of Ressa, a first-time mum and the CEO of Gameowdio, a small audio studio in the Netherlands. She built it for her own baby and runs it under Gameowdio's name. So Gameowdio is responsible for the app and for this website (the "controller" under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR).
Questions about your privacy go straight to the person who built the app: Ressa, ressa@gameowdio.nl.

The microphone
If you turn on listening, SleepySleep uses your iPhone's microphone to notice when your baby starts to fuss or cry, so it can gently bring the sound back to help them settle. Here is exactly how that works:
- It is only on during a session. The microphone runs while a SleepySleep session is going: while you're putting your baby down, when you tap "just listen" (day or night), or when listening carries on after a timed session inside the listening hours you set in the app. iOS shows its microphone indicator whenever it is on.
- Everything happens on your phone. About every second, the sound is analysed by YAMNet, an open sound-recognition model made by Google, running on your phone through Apple's Core ML. It tells a cry apart from other sounds in the room, and then the sound is let go.
- Nothing is recorded. The released versions of SleepySleep (App Store and TestFlight) cannot save audio to your phone, and no audio and no sound analysis is ever uploaded to us or anyone else.
- What it remembers is only the outcome: a short timeline of when your baby stirred, fussed or cried and for how long (your listening report, see below).
You can say no to microphone access and still use SleepySleep for sound. You can change your mind any time in iPhone Settings → SleepySleep → Microphone, or switch listening off in the app under You → Listening to your baby.
What stays on your phone
SleepySleep keeps the following on your device so the app can work. None of it is sent to us:
- your baby's name (if you give one) and age range
- your settings, such as scene, loudness, timer, wind-down length and listening hours
- your session history (when sessions started and how long they ran)
- your listening reports: the times and lengths of stirring, fussing and crying the app noticed. They contain no audio, no names and no scores.
This data is protected by iOS's built-in file encryption. Like other app data, it can be included in your iPhone's iCloud or computer backup if you have backups switched on. Those backups are handled by Apple under your own Apple account, not by us. Deleting SleepySleep from your phone deletes all of it.
Usage statistics (opt-in)
SleepySleep asks whether you'd like to "Share anonymous data" to help us improve it. Nothing is sent unless you say yes, and you can turn it off at any time in the app under You.
If you agree, the app sends short, anonymous notes about how it is used, for example:
- when a session started and ended (to the hour of the night only), how long it ran, which scene played and at what loudness
- which controls were used, such as changing the timer, loudness or scene
- whether the subscription screen was shown and what happened (for example a trial started or the screen was closed), never any payment details
- a per-session listening summary as plain counts, such as how many times the sound rose for fussing or crying
- battery level at the start and end of a session, so we can keep the app gentle on your battery
- your baby's age range, and whether you chose to enter a name (not the name itself)
- technical basics: app version, iOS version, iPhone model, whether a watch is paired, how many nights since install, and the date the data arrived
- a random ID created when the app is installed (a new one is made if you reinstall), and a random ID for each session, so events from the same session can be grouped
It never includes:
- any audio or sound analysis
- your baby's name
- your name, email, Apple ID or any other contact details
- your location
- your advertising identifier
- any time more precise than the hour of the night
The app checks every note against this list before it is saved, and drops anything that doesn't belong. Data is only sent when you open or leave the app, never in the middle of the night. Anything the app noted before you said yes is never sent.
The notes are sent over an encrypted connection to a small server we run on Cloudflare, and stored in our own Cloudflare storage. We don't store your IP address with them. Cloudflare, like any network provider, briefly processes IP addresses to deliver the data, under its own privacy commitments. We use this data only to understand how the app is used and to make it better. We keep it for up to 2 years from the day it arrives, and then it is deleted.
The app also keeps a copy of these notes in a private folder on your phone, whether or not you share them. Test versions (TestFlight) also keep a simple battery log there (battery level over the night and how often the listening ran, no audio). These local files are excluded from backups and never leave your phone unless you've said yes to sharing.
Our legal basis for usage statistics is your consent (GDPR article 6(1)(a)). Because the data is anonymous and not linked to you, we usually can't tell which data is yours. If you'd like us to try, email us.
Subscriptions and payments
SleepySleep subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles your payment details, and we never see your card, your Apple ID or your billing address. The app only learns from Apple whether your subscription is active, so it can unlock the features you paid for. This check happens on your phone, directly with Apple. SleepySleep has no server of its own for subscriptions. Because the subscription is tied to your Apple ID, "Restore purchases" brings it back on a new phone without any account with us.
You can manage or cancel your subscription any time in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Apple's handling of your purchase is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Apple Watch, Live Activity and Health
- Apple Watch. The SleepySleep watch app is a remote control for the session on your iPhone. It doesn't use the watch's microphone. The two devices talk to each other through Apple's own connection between your paired iPhone and watch.
- Live Activity. While a session runs, your lock screen can show its time and your baby's current state (for example "settled" or "fussing"). Anyone who can see your lock screen can see this, so you can switch Live Activities off in iPhone Settings if you prefer.
- Health. SleepySleep includes Apple's HealthKit feature only because iOS requires it to open the watch app on your wrist when you open SleepySleep on your iPhone. The app never asks for access to your health data, and never reads or writes any.
When you contact us
If you email us, for example with the "Send feedback" button in the app (which opens your own email app), we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to reply and to improve SleepySleep, and we delete it when you ask.
If you join the beta, Apple's TestFlight shares with us the email address (and name, if given) you were invited with, and any feedback or crash reports you choose to send through TestFlight.
This website
getsleepysleep.app has no cookies, no analytics and no tracking. Like any website, its host (Netlify) and font service (Google Fonts) see your IP address when they deliver the page.
If you sign up for the beta on this website, your email address is sent through Formspree, a form service, to us. We use it only to send you a TestFlight invite and the occasional feedback question about the beta. No newsletter. Ask us and we'll delete it.
Children
SleepySleep is made for parents and caregivers, and is not meant to be used by children. The only information about your child in the app is the name and age range you choose to enter, and the listening reports, and all of it stays on your phone.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to how we use it, and to withdraw your consent at any time (turning off "Share anonymous data" does that for usage statistics). Email ressa@gameowdio.nl and we'll answer within one month.
If you're not happy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or to the authority in the country where you live.
Changes to this policy
If SleepySleep starts handling data differently, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change reaches the app. If a change means more data would leave your phone, the app will ask you first.
